Europeans Favor the Use of Biotechnology by Farmers
April 16, 2010 |
The Association Francaise des Biotechnologies Vegetales (AFBV) in a Eurobarometer study revealed that biotechnologies are widely accepted in Europe. Around 77% of surveyed said that Europeans should encourage farmers to take advantage of the advances in biotechnology. The French gave 76% favorable public opinion as well as survey respondents in Greece, Slovakia and Estonia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Sweden, Denmark, and Slovenia who gave 86% approval for biotechnology for farmers. Younger people (below 24 years old ) approved biotechnology at an approval rating of 81%, compared to those over 55 years. In addition, over 80% of biotechnology students, executives, white collar workers were in favor, while pensioners, unemployed, domestic workers and manual workers were somewhat less favorable to biotechnology.
The report concluded that biotechnology is well perceived by European public opinion. However, more public engagement on biotechnology should be conducted to provide information on a technology that would help increase French farmers' income.
