Dalli Demands Transparency for GMO Studies
April 16, 2010 |
European Commissioner John Dalli who was instrumental in the approval of the GM ‘starch potato' Amflora last March called upon the biotechnology industry for transparency in dealing with information on biotechnology. In a speech delivered in a CropLife International hosted event, he emphasized the need for gene technology developers to participate in debates and discussions on GMO to showcase their products to the broader public, and that any relevant information should be reported immediately to the European Food Safety Authority.
The Commissioner highlighted the "Amflora" event which provoked many inquiries from the consumers and the general public. Commissioner Dalli also reiterated EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso's GMO strategy that approval for GM plants will continue to be issued in the European level.
