Plant Scientists Awarded Queen's Anniversary Prize

March 31, 2010

Scientists at the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) in Aberystwyth University in Mid Wales have been awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education. They have successfully combined fundamental research on plant genetics with plant breeding techniques to develop commercially viable plant varieties. These varieties include high-sugar and more digestible forage grasses, more persistent and consistent white clovers, high-quality oats, improved turf grasses and disease-resistant pearl millet.

"IBERS is prvileged to be building on this platform of knowledge, skill and achievement to embrace both discovery and solution driven research to solve the most pressing needs of our planet," said Vice Chancellor Noel Lloyd of Aberystwyth University.

The Queen's Award is given every two years to institutions across the United Kingdom for work of outstanding excellence.
