BCPC Welcomes New BBSRC Strategic Plan
September 18, 2009 |
A new Strategic Plan for 2010 to 2015 with focus on Food Security has been proposed by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) to the British Crop Protection Council (BCPC). The proposal is a response to the increasing food demand which needs to be increased to an estimated 50% by 2030 and doubled by 2050 to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) on hunger. The proposal will have an increased focus on strong basic science for crop protection and production and strategies to accelerate translation of research into practice.
"BBSRC is to be congratulated on producing a strategy that demonstrates significant and appropriate step change from its previous stance. It is now clearly recognising the current importance of UK food production and the need to support its agricultural science base," says Dr Colin Ruscoe, chairman of BCPC. He also stressed the need to collaborate with industry and levy boards in the implementation of "translational research".
