GM Benefits to Farmers Can be Calculated

August 22, 2008

Through economy tables, the benefits of genetically modified  (GM) crops to farmers and consumers can be calculated. M. Čeřovská, a doctoral thesis student at the Czech University of Agriculture, Department of Agroecology and Biometeorology, calculated economy tables for growing Bt maize, herbicide tolerant (HT) rape seed and sugar beet compared with standard crops.

Čeřovská said that Bt maize economy can be expressed as the function of pest infestation, which causes the yield lost or the limit lost of yield in non protected maize culture. The use of Bt maize brings positive income to farmer when the yield lost caused by pest in non protected maize would be above the limit lost. Similar formulas are presented for the other GM crops.
