UK MP Calls for GM Crops

August 22, 2008

“It is time to look again at our attitude to biotechnology and research. We need a proper debate ... it is imperative that we do research and this has to be in the public sector.” This was voiced by Scottish National Party Member of Parliament (SNP MP) Pete Wishart during the UN Year of the Potato Conference in Dundee, United Kingdom. The global potato conference is one of the events being organized to celebrate the crop.

Wishart is the constituency MP for the Scottish Crop Research Institute at Invergowrie, near Dundee which has just resumed biotechnology work. In later remarks, Wishart likewise gave his support to field trials of genetically modified crops as an extension of research work.
