USDA Predicts High Corn and Soybean Yields

August 22, 2008

A report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service forecasts a robust corn and soybean harvest despite severe flooding in the Midwest. Corn yields are expected to average 155 bushels per acre, down 6 percent from last year’s record, but up 17 percent from 2006. This would be the second highest corn yield on record, behind 2004, if the forecast proves right.

The Crop Production report also predicts that soybean production will be 2.97 billion bushels, up 15 percent from last year but down 7 percent from the 2006 record. Cotton production is down, however, by 28 percent at 13.8 million bales.
