Ugandan Farmers Show Strong Interest in Gene-Edited Cassava

A study conducted by experts from Ghent University, Belgium and Gulu University, Uganda has identified the factors that could influence farmers' willingness to adopt genome-edited cassava resistant to cassava brown streak disease. Based on a survey of 357 cassava farmers in Northern Uganda, the researchers found that farmers generally showed positive intentions to adopt the crop if it becomes commercially available, with attitudes, confidence, and social influences playing important roles in their decision-making.
The researchers utilized the model of goal-directed behavior (MGB) to examine adoption intentions under a hypothetical scenario. The results showed that positive attitudes toward the technology, perceived ability to use it, positive expectations, and support from others increased farmers' desire to adopt genome-edited cassava. The study also found that farmers' education and farming experience influenced how these factors shaped adoption decisions, suggesting that different groups of farmers may require different engagement approaches.
The researchers concluded that successful deployment of genome-edited cassava will require more than making the technology available. They recommend targeted communication and outreach strategies that consider farmers' education, experience, and motivations to encourage informed adoption of disease-resistant cassava varieties once they become available.
