Researchers Urge Stronger Public Education to Improve GMO Acceptance in Malaysia

Researchers from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) have recommended strengthening public education, improving risk communication, and adopting transparent food labeling to help consumers make informed decisions about genetically modified (GM) foods in Malaysia. The recommendations are based on a survey of 337 consumers that examined how food-related motivations influence attitudes toward GM foods.
Using structural equation modeling, the researchers found that knowledge, risk perception, technological acceptance, and labeling all shape consumer attitudes. Greater knowledge and clear labeling were linked to higher acceptance, while concerns about health and environmental risks remained a major barrier. Positive views of biotechnology also increased trust and perceived benefits of GM foods.
Based on the findings, the authors recommend that regulators provide evidence-based information about GM technology, establish standardized labeling guidelines, and improve public communication on risks and benefits. They also encourage the food industry to adopt transparent labeling and make product information easier to access. According to the researchers, combining these measures could strengthen public trust and support informed consumer choices about GM foods.
