EU Authorizes and Renews Importation of Four GM Crops
January 14, 2026| |
On December 16, 2025, the European Commission authorized the import of four genetically engineered (GE) crops for use in food and animal feed. The decision includes one new authorization for maize variety DAS1131 and the renewal of 10-year authorizations for three existing GE crops: MON 87427 maize, MON 88302 oilseed rape, and MON 87708 soybean. These crops, developed by Corteva Agriscience and Bayer CropScience, have undergone rigorous scientific assessments by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which concluded that they are as safe as their conventional counterparts.
While the authorizations allow the import and processing of these GE varieties within the European Union, they do not extend to cultivation on European soil. The Commission moved forward with the approvals after EU member states failed to reach a qualified majority in favor or against the proposals during Standing and Appeal Committee meetings. All products derived from these crops will be subject to the EU's strict labeling and traceability requirements, ensuring clear information for consumers and maintaining a high level of protection for human and animal health.
The Commission Implementing Decisions for the approvals were published in the Official Journal of the European Union. For more details, read the USDA FAS GAIN Report.
