EPA Announces Approval of GM Cholera Vaccine in New Zealand

June 11, 2025

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved the importation and release of VAXCHORA, a genetically modified (GM) cholera vaccine developed by Biocelect Pty Ltd, in New Zealand. The approval aims to protect citizens, particularly travellers, military personnel, and emergency aid workers, from the disease when travelling overseas.

Dr. Chris Hill, General Manager of Hazardous Substances and New Organisms, emphasized the importance of expanding access to vaccines for citizens traveling to regions where cholera is prevalent. “In considering this application, we reviewed the scientific data and evidence to ensure we continue to protect people's health and our unique environment,” Dr. Hill said. He noted that they are confident that this approval has no risk to the public or the environment.

As VAXCHORA is a new medicine not yet approved by Medsafe, it will be regulated under the Medicines Act 1981 as a prescription-only drug, with specific conditions on its supply. The vaccine, administered in a single oral dose, provides protection within ten days and is already approved in several countries, including Australia, the United States, and the European Union.
