EC Requires Certification for Rice Products from China

February 15, 2008

The European Commission will require a compulsory certification for the imports of Chinese rice products that could contain unauthorized GMO Bt 63. This was in response to information alerts about rice products coming in or consigned from China containing the unauthorized genetically modified rice “Bt 63”.

This ruling will take effect April 15, 2008 to give time for Member States to make arrangements for implementation. It will be reassessed after six months and the Commission will continue to actively monitor the process.
