Brazil Approves New Transgenic Maize Varieties

February 15, 2008

The Brazilian National Biosafety Council (CNBS) has allowed the release of two transgenic maize varieties, Monsanto Company’s insect-resistant MON810 and Bayer CropScience’s glufosinate-tolerant Liberty Link, for commercial use. The genetically modified (GM) maize varieties was approved by the National Technical Commission for Biosafety (CTNBio) late last year, but their use still depended on CNBS decision.

Sergio Rezende, the country’s science minister, pointed out that the varieties are safe for consumption based on CTNBio’s evaluation. Whereas CTNBio is responsible for assessing the safety of GM organisms, CNBS is in charge of evaluating the socio-economical impacts of GMO release. This is the first approval since the country passed a new biosafety code which created the CNBS in 2005.
