IPRs as an Option to Promote Excellence in Agriculture
February 8, 2008 |
The intellectual property rights (IPRs) have emerged as an option to promote excellence in agriculture said Dr. S. Nagarajan, Chairman of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority of the Government of India. He presented this view during the 38th Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Lecture at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) on 7th Feb 2008. Recognizing the importance of basic and applied research in agriculture, he cited several landmark innovations that have resulted in the transformation of Indian agriculture. These include Pusa Basmati or aromatic rice, wheat variety HD 2329, and Bt cotton hybrids.
Realizing a need to augment agricultural production and benefit the economy, legal and policy support have been framed to encourage IPR, provide R&D incentives and investment in the entire agriculture sector, Nagarajan added.
