Rwanda Targets Boosting Food Security Through Agri-biotech

Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) and the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) launched The Rwanda Agricultural Biotechnology Programme, a five-year initiative that aims to transform the country's agricultural sector by addressing major challenges in cassava, maize, and potato production. This initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is expected to assist Rwandan farmers boost crop productivity, which will lead to improving food security and household incomes.
AATF is tasked to manage the program, while RAB will oversee in-country activities, regulatory processes, and advocacy efforts. The initiatives aim to have a transformative impact on the agricultural sector, enabling farmers to overcome persistent challenges such as pests, diseases, and the climate crisis. The program is aligned with Rwanda's broader goals of boosting food security, uplifting rural livelihoods, and decreasing imports such as maize.
