Poland Defers Implementation of GM Feed Ban

October 23, 2024

Farmers in Poland are allowed to use animal feed with genetically modified (GM) crop ingredients until 2030 as President Andrzej Duda signed off the law that will defer the GM feed ban planned since 2006.

The law signed by President Duda indicates Poland's alignment with less restrictive European Union legislation on GM crops. The legislation was voted through parliament in September 2024 and will be put into force from January 2025 to 2030. It was drafted by the Ministry of Agriculture as they heed the concern of the animal feed industry for the lack of suitable alternatives to GM feed.

The Polish government's recent decision on GM feed is a reflection of the EU's shifting stance towards GM products. This change in attitude has weakened the impact of anti-GMO legislation.
