Farmers in Bangladesh Call for Awareness Campaigns and Programs on GM Crops
October 9, 2024 |
Farmers' perspectives provide valuable insights into the design of policies related to genetically modified (GM) crops. The study, published in CABI Agriculture and Bioscience, highlights the specific needs and concerns of farmers in northwest Bangladesh and provides practical guidance for developing strategies aimed at improving the adoption of GM crops in the region.
A total of 423 farmers were selected to participate in the study. Based on their perceptions and notions about GM crops, these farmers were split into three groups, namely benefit believers, risk-averse individuals, and traditionalists, to represent diverse perspectives of farmers on the use of GM technology in crops. Out of the 423 farmers, only 97 of them (23%) reported to have been cultivating GM crops like Bt brinjal. Most of the farmers cited negative perceptions and lack of confidence in profitability as barriers to adoption.
Despite the differences in perception, all farmer groups expressed the need for awareness programs and training to popularize the cultivation process of GM crops and boost their knowledge about the technology. Affordable access to GM seeds, improved irrigation, storage, and transportation infrastructure were also noted as essential factors in promoting GM crops in Bangladesh. The author recommends engaging a diverse range of farmers and stakeholders, emphasizing the benefits of GM crops, and ensuring access to necessary inputs to support successful GM crop cultivation in the region.
