October 9, 2024

Mr. Adriel Dave Alvarez during the multi-stakeholder forum Responsible Innovation: Ensuring Product Stewardship in Crop Biotech held on October 8, 2024, at the Vivere Hotel, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

Over 100 participants representing farmers, regulators, policy experts, researchers, government agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs), and industry players shared a fruitful discussion on the product stewardship of biotech crops in the Philippines during the multi-stakeholder forum. The event, titled Responsible Innovation: Ensuring Product Stewardship in Crop Biotech, was held on October 8, 2024, at the Vivere Hotel, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

Mr. Adriel Dave Alvarez, a member of the Global Farmer Network, emphasized that stewardship programs should not be detached from the economic agenda of farmers. Profitability is their main driver for farming. “We need more agriculture insurance systems that will secure investments and farmers' income,” said Mr. Alvarez. He affirmed that they will patronize and comply with the policies and regulations in place for as long as these products are affordable and accessible to Filipino farmers.

The forum highlighted the importance of collaboration and synergy among key players in the industry. “Product stewardship is a shared responsibility for all stakeholders,” said Ms. Jenny A. Panopio, Associate Director of the Stewardship and Stakeholder Partnership at CropLife Asia. Dr. Lilia A. Portales, Vice Chair of the Post Approval Monitoring Group at the Bureau of Plant Industry, emphasized the need for partners from different areas and regions to help raise awareness and continue monitoring fields planting biotech products. To promote the sustainable use of biotech products, a call to revisit and revise guidelines that safeguard the technology, the developers, and its users was raised.

The multi-stakeholder forum was moderated by Mr. Panfilo G. de Guzman, Senior Associate Scientist at ISAAA Inc., and was organized in collaboration with the Philippine Agriculture and Fisheries Biotechnology Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA Biotech).
