Bangladesh Starts Planting Bt Cotton

August 30, 2023

In Bangladesh, the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) cotton started for the first time this year. Sowing has begun after the release of the varieties approved by the National Committee on Biosafety (NCB).

In an interview with the Daily Star, Md Fakhre Alam Ibne Tabib, executive director of the Cotton Development Board (CDB), said that there will be 168 demonstration plots on 168 acres in 13 zones, namely, Jashore, Chuadanga, and Kushtia districts in the southwest and western region; Rangpur, Bogura, and Rajshahi districts in the north; and Dhaka and Mymensingh districts along with hilly districts — Khagrachari, Bandarban, and Rangamati — in the Chattogram region.

Bt cotton is expected to help increase the country's cotton yield. Bt cotton is Bangladesh's second GM crop after Bt brinjal was introduced in 2013. According to ISAAA, 27,000 smallholder farmers in Bangladesh planted Bt brinjal in 2019.
