USDA APHIS Releases Regulatory Status Review on HB4 Wheat

On August 27, 2024, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) released the regulatory status review for HB4 wheat developed by Bioceres Crop Solutions to increase drought tolerance and resistance to glufosinate. APHIS' decision is a step forward to releasing HB4 wheat for commercialization.
APHIS concludes that this genetically modified (GM) wheat does not pose increased plant pest risk and will not be subject to regulations under 7 CFR part 340. As such, HB4 wheat and its offspring derived from crosses with other non-modified and modified plants were also not subject to these regulations.
According to APHIS, although HB4 wheat will not be regulated under 7 CFR part 340, it may still be subject to APHIS Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) permit and/or quarantine requirements and other regulatory authorities, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
