Researchers Provide Recommendations to Ensure Accessibility and Affordability of Foods Derived from Biotech

August 21, 2024

Researchers from Bingham University and the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency analyzed and provided recommendations to address the socio-economic implications of foods enhanced through biotechnology. The results of their study are published in the International Journal of Research and Scientific Innovation.

Based on the assessment of the Cost of a Healthy Diet (CoHD) in Nigeria, the authors highlighted several policy interventions essential for accelerating the accessibility and affordability of biotechnological products. The recommendations include subsidies and financial support for lower-income populations, financial assistance and incentives for small-scale farmers, and robust regulatory frameworks to facilitate the approval and commercialization of biotechnological products.

Aside from policies, the authors also recommend implementing public awareness campaigns and capacity-building activities to educate farmers and consumers about the benefits and contributions of biotechnology-enhanced foods to food security and nutrition. These recommendations provide significant insights for policymakers and other important stakeholders to develop strategies ensuring the accessibility and affordability of these foods.
