Consumer Acceptance of Folate-Biofortified GM Lettuce in Brazil
August 21, 2024 |
Researchers from Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology in Brazil, together with partners, conducted a survey to assess the public perception of folate-biofortified lettuce varieties. Their findings are published in Transgenic Research.
Lettuce, a dietary staple worldwide, offers a promising platform to increase folate consumption through biofortification. To address potential folate deficiencies, researchers developed a genetically modified lettuce with elevated folate levels. However, public perception of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) remains a significant hurdle.
The study assessed Brazilian consumer acceptance of folate-biofortified GM lettuce. A survey of 2,391 respondents revealed that while 46.1% expressed willingness to consume the product and 30.5% indicated potential acceptance, overall acceptance was influenced by clear communication about the benefits of the biotechnology, specifically folate enrichment.
Key findings suggest that transparent information about the nutritional advantages of GM crops can positively impact consumer acceptance.
