USDA FAS-GAIN Releases Agri-biotech Updates in Brazil
December 14, 2023 |
Brazil continues to get ahead with GM crop planting, with 68 million hectares planted with GM crops for the 2022-2023 crop season. This forecast is mentioned in the Agricultural Biotechnology Annual released by USDA-FAS Global Agricultural Information Network and prepared by the Office of Agricultural Affairs Brasília for U.S. domestic food and agricultural product exporters.
Brazil is the second-largest adopter of GM crops globally. The country has released approvals for 105 GM crop events. The adoption rates for soybeans and cotton have reached 99% and 95% for corn. Brazil's continuous adoption of GM seeds and the market acceptance of producers have contributed to the country's boost in crop production.
Together with Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, Brazil formed the International Network for the Biosafety of Products Derived from Modern Biotechnology (ABRE-Bio). The initiative aims to develop harmonized procedures and standards to lessen the cost and time of GE risk assessment.
