Researchers Develop Novel Approach to Analyze RNA Structures

May 29, 2024

Researchers at the University of Nottingham produced a novel method to study the atomic-level structure of RNA. The team also used the technique to analyze RNA structural changes in HIV-infected cells.

The molecular interactions, biological functions, and chemical reactions of RNA are affected by its 3D structure. However, many RNAs and their protein complexes are hard to study due to their complicated structures and dynamic interactions.

To help with this issue, scientists at the University of Nottingham developed a method that combined cryogenic OrbiSIMS, a mass spectrometry technique, with computational methods to model RNA structures at the atomic level. The novel approach has enhanced precision and allowed the team to determine 3D structures of RNAs at the same level as industry standards. Their research shows how the tool plays a huge role in RNA structural biology because it can analyze complex, native RNA systems.
