Food Allergens Expert Tackles Safety and Acceptance of GM Crops
May 2, 2024 |
“What can be done to increase acceptance of safe and nutritious foods as the population increases, land for cultivation is reduced and energy costs soar?”
Dr. Richard Goodman, food allergens expert and Emeritus Professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln poses this question in his review article published in GM Crops & Food. The review article summarizes the positive impacts of GM crops since their introduction in 1995. These crops have a proven track record of safety for both consumers and the environment. Additionally, they offer significant benefits such as enhanced crop efficiency, reduced losses due to pests and diseases, improved drought resilience, and enhanced nutritional value. Despite these advantages, some countries, particularly in Africa, have adopted measures to restrict GM crops due to concerns about safety. However, with dwindling food supplies, such restrictions may become counterproductive.
Advancements in molecular biology and genetics offer even more promising tools for crop improvement. Dr. Goodman emphasizes the importance of utilizing these advancements responsibly, with rigorous risk assessments to minimize potential risks. As the article concludes, "we cannot afford to wait for perfect safety" when the future demands enough food for a growing population.
