USDA Updates RR Alfalfa Rules
January 18, 2008 |
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has set new requirements for handling genetically modified (GM) alfalfa. USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service issued an administrative order for alfalfa producers on identifying the crop. For initial orders, each bale of GM alfalfa has to be identified with a tag secured to its binding. Hay producers have the option to identify the hay by lot, including placing a sign measuring 8.5 inches by 11 inches in size - or larger - marked "Roundup Ready Alfalfa" on loads of the hay.
The order also allows commingling of Roundup Ready hay and other hays on farms, but producers are prohibited from selling the hay mixed with the GM hay unless it is clearly identified as containing Roundup Ready alfalfa.
