Germany to Update Labeling Regulations
January 18, 2008 |
The German Grand Coalition plans on a more precise regulation for food labeling in the country. Under the planned regulation, additives and stabilizers produced through biotechnology can be added to products labeled as “gene technology-free”, provided that these compounds are approved by the EU-Eco-Regulation and no non-GM produced alternatives are available. The criteria would be valid for feed supplements like vitamins, enzymes and amino acids, especially lysine, usually produced by genetically modified microorganisms. A public hearing on the planned regulation has been scheduled by the parliamentary committee for nutrition, agriculture and consumer protection.
