Scientists Map Human Epigenome

February 25, 2015

An international group of scientists mapped 111 patterns of gene expression from different human cell types, including all the major organs, immune cells and embryonic stem cells. The scientists also compiled epigenomes for induced pluripotent stem cells.

The scientists searched for features like chemical variations to DNA that control genes to be turned on or off, and differences to the histone proteins around which DNA is wrapped. Such variations can significantly affect a cell's behavior and function.
