Farmers Briefed on Biotech Crops in Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam

Thai Nguyen Provincial Farmers' Association in collaboration with the International Cooperation Department of the Central Administration of the Vietnam Farmers Association and Ag Biotech Vietnam (ISAAA's Biotechnology Information Center in Vietnam) held a seminar on Biotechnology Crops – Issues and Concerns. Over 50 participants, including the leaders and staff of Thai Nguyen Provincial Farmers Association and its branches, farmers and farmer group leaders, extension workers and members of the tri media attended the seminar.
Dr. Le Huy Ham, General Director of the Institute of Agriculture Genetics, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development presented the basic scientific information on genetic engineering stressing the fact that biotechnology is one of the solutions to help adapt climate change, ensure food security and sustainable agricultural development. Participants were also updated on the ongoing field trials for GM maize in the country as well as the country's regulatory framework. Ag Biotech Vietnam's Ms. Le Duc Linh provided information on how to access biotech resources and emphasized the need to obtain updated, correct, and objective biotechnology information from reliable sources to build biotech awareness of the farmers and the general public.
