Zambian Cotton Board Lauds Govt Policy for GM crops
May 7, 2014 |
Zambian Cotton Board secretary, Dafulin Kaonga, acknowledged the government's precautionary policy in adopting biotech crops. Kaonga mentioned this during the launch of the Global Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops 2013 held at the University of Zambia in Lusaka.
Kaonga discussed that precautions taken by the government is good because it treats the adoption of biotech crops on a case to case basis, and all possible risks were evaluated prior to commercialization. He suggested that the government should find a win-win strategy on adoption of GM crops, wherein the technology provider and the farmers are well-benefited by the technology. Kaonga also mentioned that the Cotton Development Trust (CDT) has submitted an application for approval of biotech cotton research and thus he urged the government to consider investing in capacity building so that the country would be able to develop its own biotech crops which can be made available for local farmers at cheaper costs.
