October 23, 2013 |
The Central Administration of the Vietnam Farmers' Union (VFNU) in collaboration with Agbiotech Vietnam organized a seminar on "Biotechnology crops: issues of attention" on 17 October 2013. The seminar provided scientific and technological information on biotechnology to the 35 participants composed of department heads of the Central Administration of VNFU, Farmers' Union of Hanoi City, and the districts farmers' unions, the Institute of Agricultural Genetics, Vietnam Information of Science and Technology Association (VISTA), representatives from companies such as Monsanto, CropLife, Syngenta and the news media.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dinh, Director of the International Cooperation Department of VNFU emphasized that, "science and technology programs of the State are key to better serve the needs of agricultural restructuring, improving the quality and competitiveness of agricultural products for domestic consumption and export." Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Huy Ham, Director General of the Institute of Agricultural Genetics discussed the science of biotechnology as it applies to crops in the world and in Vietnam. He emphasized that results of research and tests in the countries around the world have shown that there is no scientific evidence to prove genetically modified crops expose more risks than traditional crops. Mr. Le Duc Linh of Agbiotech Vietnam introduced the activities of Vietnam's Biotechnology Information Center (BIC Vietnam) in providing information and sharing knowledge about biotech crops in the country.
