Burkina Faso Gets US$1.2 Billion Due to Bt Cotton Production

Burkina Faso obtained more than US$1 billion from the sale of cotton in 2012. According to a survey report of International Monetary Fund (IMF), Burkina Faso's exports tripled over the last 10 years. Index Mundi, which monitors commodity prices, cotton production in Burkina Faso had gone down to almost 50% before Bt cotton was commercialized. When Bt cotton was planted in 2008, the production increased significantly. Cotton production in the country increased by 57.5 percent in 2012, as reported by Burkina National Cotton Producers Union (UNPCB).

In 2012, Burkina Faso was the 14th largest producer of biotech crops globally, and one of the three African countries planting biotech crops.
