Regional Capacity-Building Workshop on the Nagoya Protocol
April 10, 2013 |
Jordan is hosting the regional capacity building workshop on the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The workshop from April 9 to 10, aims to facilitate discussions, exchange of views and experiences. Techniques and options are expected to be developed to effectively address the needs and priorities of countries of the Middle East Region, Djibouti, Libya, and Mauritania, in their efforts towards implementation of the Nagoya Protocol.
Mr. Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), delivered the welcoming remarks. He said that the workshop is very timely because the success of the Protocol depends on effective implementation of the Parties at the domestic level. He emphasized that the Protocol provides flexibility: the challenge is to determine the best approach to implement the Protocol in order to meet common objectives while taking into account national interests.
