
Workshop on Public Awareness, Education, and Participation Concluded in Hanoi

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam and the CBD Secretariat co-organized the Asia-Pacific Regional Training Workshop on Public Awareness, Education, and Participation concerning the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) was conducted from 25 to 29 March, 2013 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Participants to the workshop come from countries in the Asia-Pacific Region including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, China, Vietnam, and Yemen. The workshop was opened in the presence of Dr. Nguyen Dong, Deputy Director General of Vietnam Environment Administration, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Mr. Charles Gbedemah, Principal Officer, Biosafety Unit, CBD Secretariat, Mr. Erie Tamale, Program Officer, Biosafety Unit, CBD Secretariat, Dr. Pham Anh Cung, Director of the Biodiversity Conservation Agency, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
This one-week long training workshop aimed to introduce the participants to relevant concepts, tools, instruments and to discuss strategies for enhancing regional and sub-regional cooperation in implementing the program of work on public awareness, education, and participation concerning the safe transfer, handling and use of LMOs. The workshop raised the understanding of the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress and explored possible opportunities and challenges relating to its ratification and implementation.
