Don't Ignore Benefits of GM Crops, says UK Chief Scientist

January 27, 2012

Prof. John Beddington, UK government's chief scientific adviser and applied population biologist at Imperial College London discussed the importance of GM crops in preventing global food crisis in his lecture titled ‘Food and Water: Challenges of the 21st Century' at the Royal Agricultural Colleges on January 20, 2012.

According to Prof. Beddington, more than one trillion meals have been made using GM crops in North America and there has not been any case in the law courts of anyone suing after consuming GM products. He also mentioned that with the growing population, synchronous with climate change and water shortages, Europe could no longer ignore the importance of GM crops in addressing agricultural problems.

"If you've got a serious problem, which in conventional mechanisms or plant breeding or other techniques you can't address, which a GM organism can, and it is properly tested for environmental or human health impact and is appropriate, I can't see any reason why you wouldn't use it," explained Prof. Beddington.
