Vistive Soybeans: Monsanto's Commitment to Better Food

June 11, 2010

Vistive low linolenic soybean is a product of 10 years of breeding soybean with lowered level of linoleic acid. It produces a more stable soybean oil that practically removes hydrogenation in the process, which is favorable for consumers because hydrogenation creates trans fats. The production of Vistive soybeans paved the way for the production of fried foods with lower or zero grams of trans fat.

Vistive low linoleic soybeans are one of the first products of Monsanto with consumer health benefits, and there are other products of this kind which are currently being developed by Monsanto. These include the Vistive High Stearate, which has healthier trans-fat in replacement of the harmful kind. Another products in the pipeline are the Omega-3 soybeans, with heart-healthy Omega-3 oils; and the Vistive Gold, which has more monosaturated fats, less saturated fats and zero trans fats.

Linda Funk, executive director of the The Soyfoods Council, has said: "Everyone is now trying to find solutions, but they still want the same functionality and taste of their typical partially-hydrogenated oil. Vistive really hits that mark. The soybean industry was very innovative and ahead of its time in having that solution available."
