Global Food Security Program Gets Aid from Europe

June 11, 2010

Efforts by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to increase agricultural productivity in developing countries got a boost from an additional €13.2 million grant from the European Union (EU). Total amount given to FAO's Food Facility Program already totals €228 million.

"It is unacceptable that one out of six persons on this planet is undernourished," said José Maria Sumpsi, FAO's Assistant Director-General of the Technical Cooperation Department. FAO will preside over two meetings this month to discuss aid to agriculture and the urgent need to invest more in small farmers in developing countries.
