Global Biotech Crop Adoption and Europe’s Experiences


Biotech crops are the fastest adopted crop technology in the history of modern agriculture. In 2019, Spain and Portugal continued to plant Bt maize because of its contributions to food security, sustainability, and climate change mitigation.

The International Service for the Acquisition of Agribiotech Applications (ISAAA) presents the latest report on the global status of GM crops in 2019 during a webinar on December 16, 2020 at 11 AM CET via Zoom.

The webinar covers the highlights of the ISAAA report including the following:

  • global area of biotech crops from 1996 to 2019; global adoption rates of principal crops; biotech adopting countries; and trends in approvals of GM events;

The global report is presented by Dr. Paul Teng, ISAAA Board Chair. Africa's experiences in biotech research and adoption is discussed by Dr. Margaret Karembu, ISAAA AfriCenter Director. A panel discussion about the experiences and challenges of Europe in biotech research and commercialization is held together with Max Kardung and Klaus Ammann, and Kenyan farmer Daniel Magondu's hopes for biotechnology in Africa.

Dr. Justus Wesseler from Wageningen University and Research, Netherlands serves as the moderator of the discussions. The webinar is hosted by ISAAA AfriCenter.
