GM Feeding Studies Show Bt Maize OK for Pigs

August 3, 2012

Researchers of the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority (Teagasc) reveal that Bt maize does not have adverse affects on the growth performance of pigs in short, medium and long-term GM feeding studies. Highlights of the study are reported in the GMSAFOOD Conference Report, a proceedings of a conference in Vienna, Austria last March 6-8, 2012. A team led by Stefan Buzoianu and colleagues concluded that:
  • Feeding Bt maize to sows during gestation and lactation resulted in offspring with improved lifetime growth performance.
  • Feeding of Bt maize to pigs of different ages and for extended periods of time is safe.
  • No allergic responses to Bt maize were found in pigs. The Bt toxin and cry1Ab transgene were not found outside of the intestinal tract.
