RP to Conduct Bt Cotton Greenhouse Trial Before 2007 Ends

October 5, 2007

Officials from the Department of Agriculture (DA) said the Philippines is looking forward to the trial on Bacillus thuringensis (Bt) cotton by the end of the year. Lead scientist Edison C. Riñen of  the Cotton Development Administration (CDA) said that the trial is set to start as soon as the Bt cotton seeds from BioCentury Trans Gene Co. of China arrive in the country. If the greenhouse trial, which will take up to five months, is successful, the CDA will conduct the field trial experiments.

CDA, an attached agency of the DA, has been awaiting the arrival of Bt cotton seeds from China since it was granted by the National Committee on Biosafety of the Philippines the permit to use the technology in November 2006. The country’s annual cotton importation is around 300,000 metric tons. The country hopes to replicate the success of India not just in the commercial propagation of Bt cotton and displacing of imports, but also in the export of genetically modified products.
