£6.8M Phenomics Center Opens

May 18, 2012

The new National Plant Phenomics Centre, a facility that features the most advanced research greenhouse in the United Kingdom was formally opened last May 14, 2012. Located at the Aberystwyth University's Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences, the centre which costs £6.8M is a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) supported national facility.

The centre has the capacity to house up to 850 individually potted plants on a series of over 300 meters long conveyor belts and has ten computer controlled cameras using fluorescence, infra-red and near infra-red, laser and root imaging technology, among others. These will enable researchers to speed up the process of identifying potentially beneficial genes of plants, as compared to current research methods.

In general, the center will aid researchers in conducting studies that will help in the development of new plant varieties that would answer the increasing global concerns on climate change and food security.
