Think Global, Act Asia to Address Food Security
August 12, 2011 |
The slogan ‘Think Global, Act Asia' came up during a session on ‘The Scope of Food Security in Asia' in the ongoing International Conference on Asian Food Security 2011, in Singapore. Experts Prof. Paul Teng, of the Nangyang Institute of Education and Prof. Rudy Rabbinge, past chair of the Science Council of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) discussed the current scenarios and causes of food insecurity in Asia as well as in the globe.
Prof. Teng discussed that scenarios in food security components - food availability, physical access, economic access and utilization has been changing over the years and currently, new strategies such as biotech crops is fully considered as one of the technologies that can address this issue.
Prof. Rabbinge on the other hand, stressed the importance of biotech crops and added that by utilizing it responsibly, it is not impossible to alleviate the challenges of food security. In addition, in order to expedite the process of producing more food in an ecological-friendly production system, countries should use least land for more food, and least resources per unit food. This can be achieved he said through the use of GM crops in Asia, having limited land area and high population growth.
