EFSA Launches Guidance on 90-day Feeding Studies on Whole Food and Feed in Rodents
July 15, 2011 |
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has launched a public consultation to discuss the draft guidance developed by its Scientific Committee regarding 90-day feeding studies on whole food and feed in rodents. These feeding studies provide information for the risk assessment of food and feed and/or individual substances that it contains.
The guidance supports applicants who wish to carry out feeding trials to determine risk assessment of novel foods as well as food and feed derived from genetically modified organisms. The draft guidance proposes the randomized block design to maximize the power of the experiment while limiting the number of test animals used.
Comments should be submitted by August 22, 2011. A summary report will be published on the EFSA website including the final guidance expected to be completed by autumn 2011.
