Kenya to Grow Bt Cotton on Large Scale by 2012

August 13, 2010

Kenya's cotton production is projected to increase six times in 2012, the expected year of Bt cotton commercialization. Regulations of the Biosafety Act are to be gazetted towards the end of August 2010, before Bt cotton can be produced on large scale. This will make Kenya as the third country to grow biotech cotton in Africa, following South Africa and Burkina Faso.

According to Charles Waturu, centre director at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute - Thika, this will step up cotton production from 50,000 bales per year to 300,000 bales and meet the country's cotton deficit. "Unless a stumbling block emerges, we are ready for commercialization," said Dr. Waturu.

The taskforce assigned in the commercialization of Bt corn has already proposed that 100,000 acres be allotted to kickstart the project.
