Form R&D Network, Bangladesh VC Tells Biotech Researchers
April 23, 2010 |
Dr. M A Sattar Mandal, Vice Chancellor of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), urged biotech scientists in Bangladesh to consolidate and form a strong national network to foster research and development activities to meet the food and nutritional requirements of the country. He was Chief Guest during a seminar organized by the Bangladesh Biotechnology Information Center in collaboration with Bangladesh Agricultural University and Bangladesh Association for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering at the BAU last April 19, 2010. Likewise, the Vice Chancellor encouraged his colleagues to sign a memorandum of understanding with laboratories in the U.S. to escalate quality biotech research.
Bangladeshi-American Dr. M Rafique Uddin of Moyen-Owen College, Tennessee, USA spoke on the impact of cloning and its ethical, social and legal implication. He likewise shared his thoughts on various aspects of biotechnology. He noted the benefits that biotech rice enriched with Vitamin A, iron and sulphur, Bt brinjal, and phytase maize would have on consumers. He mentioned that about 62% of food ingredients consumed by Americans come from biotech crops or products.
Email Dr. Khondoker Nasiruddin of the Bangladesh Biotechnology Information Center at nasirbiotech@yahoo.com for details about the seminar.
