Amendment of Labeling Regulations Criticized

August 3, 2007

An amendment to the labeling regulation put forward by the German Minister of Agriculture Horst Seehofer was immensely criticized by German agricultural associations. The amendment describes the use of the term “GM free” in labeling products without genetically modified (GM) components as the case with animals fed with plants free of GM ingredients. According to the German associations this will lead to misinterpretation, especially with those products such as medicines, enzymes and feed additives were no alternative conventional products are available. In addition, results of a poll in 2005 stated that consumers prefer declaration of “GM-free” in cases in which all levels of the production process are free of genetic engineering.

However, Ulrich Kelber, the vice-chairman of the SPD political fraction, supported the amendment citing consumer protection and further declaring that “genetically engineered feed additives and medicines are only allowed, if there is no conventional alternative”.
