Kenya Publishes Bio-Safety Bill

August 3, 2007

The establishment of a Biosafety Framework and Regulation has been a painstaking process in many developing countries of Asia and Africa. Its absence in these countries hinders the transfer of technology and materials for research collaboration and commercialization. The Kenyan government has finally published a Biosafety Bill which was previously accused as being conceived in the dark by policy makers and key stakeholders. The bill is now open for discussion and debate in July 2007.

Approval of the bill will allow Kenyans access to the enormous benefits of biotechnology especially in the field of agriculture. Potential applications of biotechnology can be harnessed to improve crop yields, reduced pesticide use, lowering cost of production and enhancing income generation for small holder farmers.
