Canada Seeks Comment on Insect-Resistant Soybean Application

August 20, 2009

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Health Canada (HC) are currently evaluating a license application from Monsanto Canada Inc. for the unconfined environmental release of an insect-resistant soybean line designated as MON 87701. The application also proposes the use of the genetically modified (GM) soybean variety for livestock feed and food. MON 87701 expresses the Cry1Ac gene for insect resistance. Monsanto Canada has submitted relevant data in accordance with CFIA guidelines for assessment of plants with novel traits for commercial release. CFIA now seeks comments on the application.
