UK Consumers Less Concerned About GM Foods

August 20, 2009

Results of the quarterly public tracker survey by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) revealed that only 21 percent of UK consumers consider GM ingredients in foods as a safety issue. This is significantly lower compared to the results of the last survey. In addition, only four percent of the interviewees cited GM foods spontaneously when requested to identify issues of concern. Food poisoning and the amounts of fat, salt and sugar in foods are the top safety issues identified by the respondents. This is followed by 33 percent citing food prices and 31 percent identifying the use of additives and presence of pesticides in foods as issues of concern.
