Tribute to Dr. Norman Borlaug
March 27, 2009 |
Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, "Father of the Green Revolution," and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate celebrated his 95th birthday on March 25, 2009. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for averting worldwide famine by starting the "Green Revolution". This was the only time in the history of the Nobel that the award was given for achievements in agriculture. He developed a "miracle wheat" that tripled grain outputs and helped countries such as India and Pakistan to overcome mass famine and starvation.
Dr. Borlaug is also founder of the World Food Prize which recognizes life-saving achievements that increase the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world. More about Dr. Borlaug at http://www.worldfoodprize.org.
On the occasion of Dr. Borlaug's 95th birthday celebration, Dr. Clive James, founder and chair of the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), forwarded this note:
Norm,
Glenys and I send you our warmest best wishes and congratulations on your 95th birthday - and here is a timely verse I composed to celebrate the fact that you are 95 years young - not old - today!!!!
North, South, East and West
Norm rates as the very best
No man can match his "grandeur" size
And that's the reason, for his Nobel Prize
God bless,
Clive and Glenys James
and The Board, management and staff of ISAAA - we are proud to have you as the "father" patron of ISAAA
